In March, the Fluid team attended Performance Days at Messe München, one of the leading sourcing events for the global outdoor and performance apparel industry.
The event brings together fabric mills, suppliers, and innovators with a shared focus on functionality, sustainability, and future-facing development.
For Fluid, the objective was clear:
- Source fabrics and trims for current product development
- Strengthen relationships with existing suppliers
- Identify new partners
- Understand emerging trends shaping the market
The Shift Toward Circularity
One of the most prominent themes across the exhibition was the continued advancement of textile-to-textile (T2T) recycling systems.
Unlike traditional recycling methods, T2T focuses on recovering fibres from existing garments and reintroducing them into new textile production, moving the industry closer to a circular model.
While still evolving, the level of innovation and investment in this area signals a clear direction of travel.
Alongside this, bio-based materials are gaining traction, offering alternatives to traditional synthetic fibres while maintaining performance characteristics.
Performance Innovation: Beyond Traditional Fabric Behaviour
Innovation was not limited to sustainability.
We saw significant development in performance fabric engineering, particularly around moisture management.
New fabric constructions are now capable of:
- Actively transporting moisture away from the body
- Moving sweat across fabric layers regardless of the entry point
- Enhancing cooling through directional moisture flow
These developments move beyond passive performance, into actively responsive fabrics.
Digital Product Passports: From Concept to Regulation
Another key development discussed across the event was the rise of digital product passports (DPPs).
Mandatory for sales in the EU and expected to follow shortly in the UK under EU legislation by 2027, DPPs aim to:
- Improve supply chain transparency
- Enable full product traceability
- Support circularity and recycling initiatives
For brands, this represents a shift toward data-backed product accountability.
For sourcing and development partners, it reinforces the importance of structured processes and clear documentation across the supply chain.
What This Means for Apparel Brands
For brands operating in technical apparel, these developments are not theoretical; they are becoming operational requirements.
The direction of travel is clear:
- Greater transparency
- Stronger compliance expectations
- Increased technical complexity
- Faster innovation cycles
Understanding how to integrate these developments into commercially viable products will be key.
Turning Insight into Application
Events like Performance Days provide valuable exposure to emerging technologies — but the real value lies in how those insights are applied.
At Fluid, the focus is always on translating innovation into:
- Practical product development
- Commercially viable solutions
- Structured sourcing strategies
The goal is not to chase trends, but to identify what is relevant, viable, and beneficial for each client’s product journey.
Looking Ahead
The pace of innovation in technical apparel continues to accelerate, driven by both performance demands and regulatory change.
Maintaining visibility into these developments allows Fluid to guide clients with clarity — ensuring products are not only well designed, but aligned with where the industry is heading.
